The Internet of Things is all about transforming everyday objects into connected devices, but existing solutions are expensive and power hungry. Enter Helium, the blockchain-based IoT network built by a grassroot network of individuals compensated for their support with cryptocurrency. Helium is low-power, low-cost, and access is quickly spreading across Connecticut. Join us for an overview of IoT systems and an overview of the players, including Helium, followed by Q&A. Want to learn more about Helium? Watch the video below.

In the second hour, students will be shown how to create a Helium Console account and how to access Hardshare, MakerspaceCT's platform for remote development of IoT devices. Participants will virtually borrow a board physically located at MakerspaceCT (within range of our Helium hotspot) and use it to transmit packets through the Helium network. Participants who set up the Helium app on their phone may receive 3HNT.

No experience necessary.
