4 Session Class with Prerequisites and Homework

In this course, you will gain a strong foundation in Mastercam programming (CAM) and CNC machining. You'll learn about shop safety, basic metrology (measuring), and blueprint reading. With guidance from the instructor and written instructions, you will design a part in Mastercam using a provided print (CAD). After that, you'll use Mastercam to program tool paths (CAM) which will be executed using the Haas CNC mill. During the last session, you'll explore custom fixturing, parts with multiple operations, program/machine troubleshooting, and program changes.

Prerequisites:

You must read the documentation and watch the YouTube videos provided before attending this class. Additionally, you need to be at least 18 years old and attend all four nights of the class.

Class 1 (3 hours)

Tuesday, April 11, 2023, 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Objectives:

  • Shop safety: Watch basic shop safety video [10 – 15 minutes]
  • Demonstrate basics of metrology: Use of 0”-6” calipers, 0”-1” micrometer, gauge blocks, height gauge, inspection surface plate, machinist measuring terms, basic blueprint reading. [30 – 45 minutes]
  • Mastercam programming: You will use instructions from the teacher as well as written instructions to program a part from the provided print. This involves developing a solid model using CAD and starting the tool path generation (CAM). The class will also cover strategy and industry best practices. [2 hours]

Class 2 (3 hours)

Thursday, April 13, 2023, 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Objectives:

  • Mastercam programming: You will finish programming your part, simulate the tool paths, and troubleshoot any issues. You will then post-process your program to generate G-code, and load onto a flash drive.

Class 3 (3 hours)

Tuesday, April 18, 2023, 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Objectives:

  • CNC milling using the Haas: You will set up the Haas machine to run a part. This involves loading the program from a USB, setting the G54 work origin, properly setting up and loading tools, touching off tools, dry running a part program, and finally running an actual program.

Class 4 (3 hours)

Objectives:

  • CNC milling using the Haas: You will cover additional methods for CNC milling. This involves using custom fixtures, making parts with multiple operations, and troubleshooting issues with the program/cycle. Students will learn wear offsets, editing programs at the Haas pendant, and emergency procedures.

Final Objectives:

By the end of this course, you should be able to demonstrate safe shop practices, basic metrology skills, and basic blueprint reading skills. You will learn how to navigate and perform basic CAD and CAM operations in Mastercam. Moreover, you will be able to safely operate the Haas mill and fabricate your own part from a provided print by using the proper tools, speeds & feeds, and procedures. Additionally, you will understand the use of custom fixtures, multiple operations, and advanced functions of the Haas mill.

Path to Professional Certification

MakerspaceCT does not provide a professional certification to students upon completing this course. However, the content will prepare you to pursue the Mastercam Core Certification or Haas Basic Mill Operator Certification. Additional study would be required. Both companies provide free training resources and charge fees to take the in person certification exam. Please refer to Mastercam University or the Haas Certification Program for more info.

You do not have to be a member to take this workshop. Please sign up on our website at the link below and pay tuition if you wish to attend. No experience required. Please note that MakerspaceCT's Machine Shop is an 18+ space.

This program is currently limited to no more than four (4) participants at a time.
