  Laser engraving is a fun and interesting skill that can range from an enjoyable hobby to a lucrative business opportunity. Engraving can be used to personalize everyday objects, such as coasters, keychains, and barware. Lasers can even cut materials with details that are impossible for other tools! This is the perfect launching point into larger CNC operations, such as the plasma cutter or the techno router table. This is the perfect course for dipping your toes into the world of CNC machines!

  CNC routers are a powerful tool in any modern maker’s arsenal. They can be used to cut, carve and shape many materials including wood, plastics, foam, cardboard, non-ferrous metals and many more. They are quite often able to produce parts more accurately and efficiently than traditional manual processes freeing up makers to design, assemble and create more. This course is specific to the Techno Titan CNC at MakerspaceCT, but many of the principles covered apply to CNC routing on any machine.

  This course is taught in two parts:

  • VCarve Pro software: design and toolpathing
  • Running a job on the CNC:  bit selection & feeds and speeds

  Schedule for Session 1:

  • All students will be using provided PCs with VCarve Pro loaded on it as the instructor demonstrates in real time how to design in VCarve Pro
  • We will discuss machine settings, where to set datum/zero points, and an overview of VCarve Pro's tools
  • We will then learn how to make basic shapes
  • Next will be learning the toolpath functions & their uses 

     Session 2: Running a job on the CNC

  • We will go back to the CNC machine & each student will be shown how to save their toolpaths to a file that each will run on the CNC to make their own shapes out of plywood (welcome to bring your own FLAT wood)
  • Each student will get comfortable on how to secure their work to workbed & zeroing each tool & material. Load file into pendant & run their program to make a sign. 

  Instructor may adapt the class to the needs of the individuals based on experience levels.

  All students are encouraged to stay the entire time as there will be many questions asked along the way. CNCs are big, powerful & intimidating and the best way to get comfortable using them is by understanding your files & first hand experience.  

  BEFORE TAKING THE CLASS:

  Please Note: Additional training or membership-level access may be required to use the Titan.   This intro workshop is a great way to begin to learn the ancient art and science of the blacksmith. Mike will walk you through four of the basic skills of forging: drawing, upsetting, twisting, and punching which can be combined to create thousands of simple blacksmithing projects. You will then heat and hit some steel! Introductory projects will include a bottle opener or a pair of tongs.

  Our instructor, Julie Gauthier, has been working as a software engineer for 10 years. While completing an MS degree in Computer Science, she did a deep-dive into the principles of machine learning. Since then, she has been an early tinkerer with AI tools as they have been released at a rapid rate since breakthrough ChatGPT, experimenting with how these tools may augment day-to-day life!

  Learn to make a Giant Pole Puppet.

  
  Pole puppets are an accessible way to create a giant impact for any performance or protest and it will fold up to fit in your car!

  Participants will learn cardboard construction, papier mache techniques, fabric design, puppet design, puppet assembly and how to operate them. Each person can design and create their own puppet to take home and decorate.

  ALL MATERIALS PROVIDED. STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO BRING THEIR OWN CARDBOARD, FABRIC, AND EMBELLISHMENTS.

  This is a 4 session commitment, please schedule accordingly. This workshop is for Adults 18+ only.

  Instructor Anne Cubberly is a Hartford-based artist known for her towering, expressive puppets made from recycled materials.   Class Title: Introduction to Resin SLA 3D Printing

  Prerequisite: 

  One Session: 2 Hours

  Course Objectives: In this workshop, participants will learn the fundamentals of Resin Stereolithography (SLA) 3D printing, including the technique's principles, applications, safety considerations, and hands-on experience in creating their own resin 3D printed object.

  Outcomes:
  

  • Understanding the basics of Resin SLA 3D printing technology.
  • Operating and calibrating an SLA 3D printer.
  • Preparing 3D models for resin printing using slicing software.
  • Gaining insights into post-processing techniques for resin prints.

  This class is designed as an introductory session, providing a foundational understanding of Onshape. It is not a comprehensive course but rather a stepping stone to get you started. Participants will gain basic skills in sketching, 3D modeling, and exporting designs for use with other MakerspaceCT tools and equipment, equipping them with the essential knowledge to explore further on their own or in more advanced classes. This session aims to ignite your interest and confidence in CAD, paving the way for deeper learning and more complex projects in the future.

  Onshape is a powerful, cloud-based Computer-Aided Design (CAD) platform that enables users to create, edit, and share 3D models collaboratively in real-time. With professional-grade features accessible from any device, Onshape revolutionizes the way designers and engineers work together.  Onshape offers free accounts, as well as paid accounts, details of which will be covered in the class.

  This intro workshop is a great way to begin to learn the ancient art and science of the blacksmith. Mike will walk you through four of the basic skills of forging: drawing, upsetting, twisting, and punching which can be combined to create thousands of simple blacksmithing projects. You will then heat and hit some steel! Introductory projects will include a bottle opener or a pair of tongs.

  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the safety procedures of the forge area.
  • Understand the function, purpose, and proper use of the tools of the forge area.
  • Develop a baseline confidence using the tools and the basic techniques of forging.

  • General understanding of forge safety and basic techniques, 1 x 
  • Take home project: completed bottle opener or pair of tongs

  Learn the basics of design and safe operation for the Koike Aronson ShopPro™ Plasma Cutting Table. This high performance CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machine allows the user to cut steel and other metal materials with precision and accuracy.

  Dress Code: Wear natural fiber clothing, long pants, closed toed shoes (leather or natural fiber). No synthetic fabrics of any kind. Please don't wear loose fitting clothing that could get caught in machinery. Long hair must be tied back. MakerspaceCT provides welding jackets, gloves, masks and helmets with eye protection. Participants are welcome to bring their own PPE.

Engraving can be used to personalize everyday objects, such as coasters, keychains, and barware. Lasers can even cut materials with details that are impossible for other tools! This is the perfect launching point into larger CNC operations, such as the plasma cutter or the techno router table. This is the perfect course for dipping your toes into the world of CNC machines!
